The essentials in 30 seconds
An AI poster generator promises a poster from a single sentence, and the free tier almost always ends in the same place : print resolution. An A3 at 300 DPI needs 3,508 × 4,961 pixels, and none of the 9 pages measured on August 14, 2026 shows the size of its free files.
Second wall : the download itself. Visme only offers JPG, PNG and PDF from the Starter plan at 12.25 $ a month, and Media.io caps its free tier at 10 file conversions a day. On the other side, Design.com promises everything, vector files included : every tool is detailed below.
The reflex : define the format BEFORE generating, then let Nation AI’s tools write the prompt. The composer built into this article assembles yours in four clicks.
« Create a poster with AI for free » is a trap query : the tools exist, there are many of them, and almost all display the word free in large letters. What they never display is the file you get at the end. We opened the pages of the nine most visible generators on August 14, 2026, read what they promise, and noted what they actually quantify. Here is the result, measured page by page.
What an AI poster generator is
An AI poster generator takes a written description, a layout idea, sometimes a photo or a logo, and produces a complete poster visual : composition, colors, and professional-looking typography. Most of them then add an editor to tweak the text and colors by hand, like Canva or Design.com.
Generated poster, printed poster : two different objectsA concert-hall poster comes in two deliverables : the generated image (a raster file, PNG or JPG, measured in pixels) and the print file (a vector PDF with bleed, handed to the printer). Generators mostly produce the first one. This guide explains how to judge both.
Three families coexist : pure generators (Design.com, Easemate, Cutout.pro : from text to poster), design suites that added AI (Canva, Adobe Express, Visme, Venngage), and media tools that offer posters as an option (CapCut, Media.io, Photoroom, Veed). The free-tier wall sits in a different place in each family, and that is exactly what the table below measures.
The rule that changes everything : a poster gets printed
Generator pages talk about « high image quality » and « print-ready formats », never about pixels. But printing is simple arithmetic : the professional standard is 300 DPI, that is 300 dots per inch, and a paper format converts to pixels exactly.
| Print format | Paper dimensions | Pixels needed at 300 DPI | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| A4 | 210 × 297 mm | 2,480 × 3,508 | Flyer, window poster |
| A3 | 297 × 420 mm | 3,508 × 4,961 | Hall poster, corridor, shop |
| A2 | 420 × 594 mm | 4,961 × 7,016 | Large urban poster |
| A1 | 594 × 841 mm | 7,016 × 9,933 | Bus shelter, billboard |
| 50 × 70 cm | 500 × 700 mm | 5,906 × 8,268 | Decorative poster, movie poster |
An image generated at 1024 × 1536 pixels, the usual size of web outputs, makes an A4 at roughly 125 DPI : acceptable at one meter, blurry up close. The same image on an A3 drops to 88 DPI. That is why the question to ask a generator is not « is it free » but « what file size do I get, and in which format ».
Beware of « high resolution » without numbersPages that use the phrase without giving pixel dimensions are saying nothing. « High resolution » is not a unit : a 300 DPI A3 PDF and a 1024-pixel JPG can both be sold under that name. The only information that matters is the size in pixels, or the vector format.

The nine generators measured on August 14, 2026
Every row of the table comes from the tool’s official page, opened on August 14, 2026 in its French version. When the page does not publish the information, it says so : the absence is itself a fact.
| Tool | What the page promises | What is quantified | The free-tier wall |
|---|---|---|---|
| Design.com | « 100 % free », « high-resolution PNG and JPG », vector « PDF, EPS, SVG », « irrevocable worldwide license for commercial use » | Nothing : no pixel size published | The pricing grid does not load in automated reading : everything rests on the landing page promises |
| Canva | « Create a poster online for free », « Start for free » | PRO badges on Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and Translation ; Magic Write, Dream Lab and Magic Media marked FREE | Part of the AI features is marked PRO on the page itself |
| Adobe Express | « Start for free » | Not recorded | Page unreachable in automated reading : not recorded |
| CapCut | « Download for free », « designed for commercial use » (FAQ) | No resolution figure, no watermark mention | Commercial use is claimed, resolution and watermark are not quantified |
| Visme | « Sign Up Free », « Create beautiful content faster » | Basic 0 $ : unlimited projects, « Templates & Design Assets Limited » | JPG, PNG and PDF download only appears on the Starter plan at 12.25 $ a month |
| Media.io | « Create unlimited AI images. 100 % free! » | Free account : 10 file conversions a day, normal speed ; Premium 35.40 € a year : unlimited, 10 times faster | 10 conversions a day and normal speed on the free tier |
| Venngage | « Free poster maker » | Not recorded | The pricing page serves other content : not recorded |
| Photoroom | « Start the free trial » | Not recorded | Not recorded |
| Vistaprint | Poster printing with delivery (a print site, not a generator) | Not recorded | The generator and the printing are two separately paid steps |
The first result of the search is also the most promising on paper : Design.com announces free vector files and a worldwide commercial license, something no other top generator writes in black and white. Two measured reservations : the page publishes no pixel size, and its pricing grid does not load in automated reading. The promise, therefore, gets verified at download time, not before.
Canva remains the reference for poster editing, and its page displays the boundary itself : Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and translation carry a PRO badge, while Magic Write, Dream Lab and Magic Media stay marked FREE. The boundary runs through the magic studio itself : poster templates and the editor are free, part of the AI features is paid.
CapCut is the only one of the group to answer the commercial-use question head-on, in its own FAQ : its poster generator is « designed for commercial use ». On the other hand, neither the pixel resolution nor the watermark is mentioned on the page. When a tool claims commercial use but stays silent about file size, it is the size you need to check.

Visme is the clearest example of the free-tier wall measured today : the Basic plan at 0 $ offers unlimited projects but « Templates & Design Assets Limited », and the « Download as JPG, PNG, PDF » line only appears on the Starter plan, at 12.25 $ a month (prices shown in dollars, even in French). Visme’s free plan lets you design, not recover the file.

Media.io pushes the paradox furthest : the landing page promises « unlimited AI images, 100 % free », and the comparison table on the same page quantifies the free tier at 10 file conversions a day, at normal speed. The infinity of the promise is therefore a quota of 10, with a slow queue : the very definition of a wall.
The poster prompt composer
The quality of a generated poster depends on the prompt, and a good poster prompt always contains the same four things : the format, the use, the style, and what the text must carry. The tool below assembles these four choices into a complete prompt, with the text-fidelity clause missing from most prompts found online. Paste it into any image generator.
The poster prompt composer
Four choices, one paste-ready prompt, with the clause that forbids invented text.
Your prompt
Create a poster in the format chosen below. Vertical A4 format (210 x 297 mm), 10 mm margins, text readable from 1 meter. Poster for a local event : event title, date, time, place, entry price. Modern and clean style : large bold title, single flat color block, generous spacing. Compose the following text : [TITLE] large, [DATE] and [PLACE] below. Replace every bracketed field with the real text. No invented text, no distorted letters : leave the fields empty if information is missing. High-resolution image, readable from afar, consistent style.
Paste it into an image generator. Nation AI generates your poster visual in English and accepts a starting image to modify.
The library of formulations
These are the sixteen fragments the tool assembles. They are reusable as-is, even by hand : each one is a complete sentence, in the imperative, without a superfluous adjective.
| Setting | Choice | The wording to use |
|---|---|---|
| Format | A4, flyer | Vertical A4 format (210 x 297 mm), 10 mm margins, text readable from 1 meter |
| Format | A3, classic poster | Vertical A3 format (297 x 420 mm), large visual area, text readable from 2 meters |
| Format | A2, large format | Vertical A2 format (420 x 594 mm), spectacular composition, text readable from 4 meters |
| Format | Square, social media | Square format for social media (1080 x 1080), striking visual at thumbnail size |
| Use | Local event | Poster for a local event : event title, date, time, place, entry price |
| Use | Advertising a business | Advertising poster for a business : main offer, price, address, opening hours |
| Use | Personal announcement | Personal announcement poster : short main message, discreet contact |
| Use | Movie, game or album release | Release poster for a movie, game or album : catchy title, strong atmosphere, discreet secondary information |
| Style | Modern and clean | Modern and clean style : large bold title, single flat color block, generous spacing |
| Style | Vintage | Vintage style : retro typography, muted palette, slightly aged paper texture |
| Style | Dramatic cinema | Movie-poster style : strong contrast, dramatic lighting, diagonal composition |
| Style | Bright and colorful | Bright and colorful style : vivid palette, round shapes, festive energy |
| Text | Title, date and place | Compose the following text : [TITLE] large, [DATE] and [PLACE] below |
| Text | Title and three details | Compose the following text : [TITLE] large, then three short pieces of information : [DETAIL 1], [DETAIL 2], [DETAIL 3] |
| Text | Image only | Minimal text : only [TITLE] large, everything else is carried by the image |
The method for a poster that prints
- Define the format before generating. A4 for a flyer, A3 for a hall, A2 and beyond for the street. The format determines the number of pixels to demand, and therefore the tool to choose.
- Ask for the size, not the promise. After the first generation, check the actual dimensions of the downloaded file. Below the pixel table above, the print will come out blurry.
- Prefer vector when it exists. A PDF, an SVG or an EPS prints at any size without loss. Design.com announces it for free, Canva exports it as PDF, Visme reserves it for paid plans.
- Otherwise, upscale the image before printing. A raster file that is too small can go through an image upscaler before reaching the printer. It is a patch, not a solution : upscaling invents details that never existed.
- Check the license and the watermark. Commercial use is the last line to read. CapCut claims it, Design.com writes it, the others stay silent : when in doubt, caution is the default answer.
The honest French routeNation AI generates your poster visual from a prompt, in English, and you can try it free on the image generator page. The subscription at 19 € a month, or 9 € for 2 weeks, includes 50 images a month (creation and editing). What Nation AI does not do : build the vector print PDF with bleed. The generated image is the starting point ; the print file is prepared afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
Can you create a poster with AI without signing up?
None of the nine pages measured on August 14, 2026 offers to download a poster without creating an account. The free tier almost always starts after signup, and the wall then moves to resolution, quota or download format. The « no signup » shown by some sites applies to trying, not to recovering the file.
What is the best free AI poster generator?
It depends on what you call free. Design.com promises the most (vector files, commercial license, instant download), without quantifying its file sizes. Visme is the clearest about the wall : designing is free, downloading as JPG, PNG or PDF starts at 12.25 $ a month. Media.io displays its quota : 10 conversions a day. The table above gives all nine cases, page by page.
How do you make an event poster for free?
Three steps : define the format (A4 or A3), assemble the prompt with the composer above, and generate. Then add the title, date, time and place with an editor if the generator distorted the text : it is the most common flaw of generated posters, and the composer’s fidelity clause exists precisely to limit it.
Can you use an AI-generated poster commercially?
Yes, as long as the tool allows it. CapCut claims it in its own FAQ, Design.com writes it on its page (« irrevocable worldwide license for commercial use »). For the others, the commercial-use line is in the terms of the plan you use, not on the landing page.
Is Canva free for making a poster?
Poster templates and the editor are free, and the page invites you to « start for free ». But the same page marks some AI features with a PRO badge : Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, Magic Grab and translation. Magic Write, Dream Lab and Magic Media remain free. Classic creation is free, part of the AI is paid.
Can you create a poster from a photo?
Yes. Several generators accept a starting image (Media.io advertises photo upload, Design.com imports a logo), and generalist image generators can turn a photo into a poster visual. That is also what the Nation AI image generator does : it modifies the image you send instead of inventing a new one.
What resolution do you need to print a poster?
The professional standard is 300 DPI. That means 2,480 × 3,508 pixels for an A4, 3,508 × 4,961 for an A3, and 4,961 × 7,016 for an A2. The format table, with dimensions in millimeters and pixels, is in the second section of this article.
In summary
The free tier of AI poster generators ends in three places, always the same : file size, download format, and license. On August 14, 2026, none of the nine measured pages publishes the pixel size of its free files, Visme reserves JPG, PNG and PDF for the 12.25 $ a month plan, and Media.io caps its free tier at 10 conversions a day. The answer fits in four words : define the format first, ask for the size next, prefer vector, and read the license before printing.
If this way of reading tool promises sounds familiar, the same exercise was done on AI logo generators, on editing photos with AI and across the Nation AI tools hub : same spirit, measured page by page, promise against published pricing.
