How Long Should a Cover Letter Be? One Page, 3 or 4 Paragraphs

In short
A cover letter fits on one page, in three to four short paragraphs.
  • Monroe Community College’s career center wants it even shorter: half a page to three-quarters.
  • Academic cover letters run longer: for faculty applications, Purdue OWL expects up to two pages.
  • A letter pasted into an email body goes shorter still.
  • Natalie shortens an existing draft on request, for an email or an online form.

Your cover letter just spilled onto its second page, and the send button is waiting. The number to aim for is one page, in three to four short paragraphs, and the exceptions are below.

How Long Is a Cover Letter Supposed to Be?

The career centers that put a number on it agree. Monroe Community College’s career center caps the letter at “3 to 4 brief paragraphs” on half a page to three-quarters: “It should not exceed one page.”

National American University’s career services sets the same ceiling and sketches the shape: “Write one paragraph of introduction, one to three paragraphs to highlight your skills, and one paragraph to conclude.” The University of Rhode Island’s alumni FAQ boils it down further: “Ideally a cover letter has 3 paragraphs.”

The career centers above count pages and paragraphs. CareerOneStop, the job-search site sponsored by the United States Department of Labor, counts words too: “A good letter can be about 200-400 words, with just 3-4 short paragraphs.” Our AI cover letter generator page answers in words as well: about 250 to 400. And if the resume your letter points to needs work too, our guide shows how to make a resume with AI.

What a Short Cover Letter Looks Like

Natalie wrote the longer letter below in a chat session, for a fictional candidate, Jordan Lee, and a fictional Denver company, Brightwell Analytics; on request, she returned the shorter version beside it.

Before: 122 words

Dear Brightwell Analytics Hiring Team,

I’m applying for the Senior Accountant position in Denver. With a B.S. in Accounting and experience improving reconciliations, reporting, and close processes, I’m ready to take on greater responsibility for month-end close and reporting accuracy.

At Northstar Books, I reconciled 120 accounts each month, reducing discrepancies by 18%. At Cedar & Finch, I prepared 40 quarterly reports and helped shorten the close process by three days. These results reflect the careful account review and process improvement I would bring to Brightwell Analytics.

I’m now looking to build on that experience by leading month-end close and helping ensure reliable, timely reporting. I’d welcome the opportunity to discuss how my background could support your accounting team.

Best,
Jordan Lee

Dear Brightwell Analytics Hiring Team,

What stays in both: the Senior Accountant role, the two numbers behind it, and the request for a conversation. For a full letter built for another situation, our cover letter examples page has one ready.

When the Number Changes

Three cases change the number.

Academic jobs

Up to two pages

For an application built on research and teaching, Purdue OWL expects more room: an academic cover letter usually passes a page and a half, “but not more than two”, in “roughly five to eight paragraphs”.

Email applications

The letter rides in the message

When the letter sits in the email itself, Rhode Island’s alumni FAQ says your address, the employer’s and the date can go, and it tends to be briefer. Swinburne University of Technology in Australia warns against one “too long and overwhelming for an email”.

Online forms

The form sets the limit

A box that counts characters wins: fit the letter inside the count it gives. Natalie adapts a letter to a form’s limit on request.

Natalie’s warning: what to cut first

Cut by facts, not by feel. Keep the two to four achievements that actually support this application, and leave the rest of your resume out of the letter. Never fill the leftover space with experience you do not have: Natalie works only from what you give her.

“Hand me a draft that runs past one page, and I keep the two to four facts that carry the application; the rest goes back to your resume. Tell me the form’s character limit, or ask for an email version, and I trim the letter to fit.”

Frequently asked questions

Is a cover letter that runs to two pages too long?

For most jobs, yes. Monroe Community College caps it, National American University says keep to one page, and the University of Rhode Island agrees: no more than one. Purdue OWL’s two-page allowance covers academic applications only.

Would 400 words make a cover letter too long?

No. CareerOneStop’s range ends at about 400 words, and our tool page sits in the same band, at 250 to 400 words for a letter.

How many paragraphs should a cover letter have?

Three to four. Monroe Community College says 3 to 4 brief paragraphs; National American University sketches one introduction, one to three on your skills and one to conclude; the University of Rhode Island puts the ideal at 3.
