Hours calculator for work hours, time and decimals
Weekly work hours with breaks and overtime, time between two times, adding hours and minutes, and decimal hours: everything updates as you type.
Examples:
Calculations run in your browser and nothing is sent; the week you enter stays saved in this browser. Overtime uses weekly rules only (no daily overtime, as in California, and no night or holiday premiums); your contract or local law may set other rates.
How to calculate your hours worked in a week
- In the “Work hours” tab, enter the start time, the end time and the length of the break in minutes for each day you worked.
- If your schedule is the same every day, fill in Monday and click “Copy Monday to Tuesday–Friday”.
- Each day’s hours appear at the end of its row, and the weekly total appears below, in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, with your daily average.
Overnight shifts work too: from 10 PM to 6 AM with a 30-minute break, the day counts 7 h 30 min and is marked “overnight”. Choose the overtime rules of your country to see your overtime hours, and add your hourly rate to estimate your gross pay for the week. Your hours stay saved in your browser for next time, and nothing is sent anywhere.
Overtime rules by country
- United States: under the Fair Labor Standards Act, non-exempt employees earn at least 1.5 times their regular rate for every hour over 40 in a workweek. At $15 an hour, a 47 h 30 min week pays 40 × $15 = $600, plus 7.5 × $22.50 = $168.75 of overtime, for a total of $768.75. Some states add daily overtime: in California, hours over 8 in a day are also paid at 1.5 times. The calculator applies the weekly rule only.
- United Kingdom: there is no legal right to extra pay for overtime. Your contract sets the rate, but your average pay for all the hours you work must not fall below the National Minimum Wage, and the Working Time Regulations limit the working week to 48 hours on average unless you opt out.
- India: under the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, in force since 21 November 2025, overtime is paid at twice the ordinary rate of wages. The calculator counts hours over 48 a week; daily limits, set by the Code and state rules, are not included.
- Other countries: choose “Custom rule” and set the weekly threshold and the multiplier. In Ontario, for example, overtime starts after 44 hours a week at 1.5 times.
The pay shown is a gross estimate, before taxes, deductions, bonuses and the rules of your own contract.
How to calculate the time between two times
In the “Time between” tab, enter a start time, an end time and, if needed, a break: from 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM, 8 h 45 min go by, or 8.75 hours. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day: from 11 PM to 1:30 AM, the duration is 2 h 30 min.
By hand, subtract the minutes first, then the hours, borrowing an hour when the end minutes are smaller: 5:15 minus 8:30 in 24-hour time is 17:15 − 8:30, which becomes 16:75 − 8:30, or 8 h 45 min.
Add or subtract time from a clock time
The “Time + duration” option answers “what time will it be in…?”. 2:30 PM plus 2 h 45 min is 5:15 PM; 11:30 PM plus 45 minutes is 12:15 AM the next day. To go back in time, choose “subtract”: 10:00 AM minus 50 hours is 8:00 AM, two days earlier.
Add hours and minutes
A regular calculator gets time wrong because it counts in base 10: 7.30 + 8.45 gives 15.75, while 7 h 30 min + 8 h 45 min make 16 h 15 min. The “Add hours” tab does the math correctly. Each row can be added or subtracted, and the total can be multiplied: 7 h 30 min + 8 h 15 min − 45 min = 15 h, and 15 h × 5 = 75 h, or 3 days and 3 hours.
Decimal hours and minutes
Payroll and time tracking software often count in decimal hours: 7.75 hours means 7 h 45 min, not 7 h 75 min. To turn minutes into decimals, divide them by 60; to go back, multiply the decimal part by 60. The “Convert” tab accepts 7.75, 7h45, 7:45 or 465 min and gives every format at once.
| Minutes | Decimal hours |
|---|---|
| 6 min | 0.1 h |
| 15 min | 0.25 h |
| 20 min | 0.33 h |
| 30 min | 0.5 h |
| 40 min | 0.67 h |
| 45 min | 0.75 h |
| 7 h 45 min | 7.75 h |
| 40 h | 2,400 min |

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my hours worked?
For each day, subtract the start time from the end time, then take away the break. The “Work hours” tab does it for the whole week: enter the start, end and break of each day, and the total, the daily average and your overtime appear.
How do I calculate the hours between two times?
Subtract the minutes, then the hours, borrowing 60 minutes if needed: from 8:30 AM to 5:15 PM, there are 8 h 45 min. The “Time between” tab does it directly and can take a break off.
How do I calculate hours for an overnight shift?
Add 24 hours to the end time before subtracting: from 10 PM to 6 AM, work out 30:00 − 22:00, which is 8 hours. The calculator does it on its own as soon as the end time is earlier than the start time.
How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?
Divide the minutes by 60 and add them to the hours: 7 h 45 min = 7 + 45/60 = 7.75 hours. The other way round, multiply the decimal part by 60: 7.4 hours = 7 h 24 min. The “Convert” tab gives every format at once.
How do I add hours and minutes?
Add the minutes and the hours separately, then turn each block of 60 minutes into an hour: 7 h 30 min + 8 h 45 min = 15 h 75 min, or 16 h 15 min. The “Add hours” tab handles as many rows as you need, with subtractions and a multiplier.
When does overtime start?
It depends on the country. In the United States, after 40 hours in a workweek for non-exempt employees; in India, after 48 hours a week; in the United Kingdom, the law sets no threshold, so your contract does. Pick your country in the calculator, or set a custom rule.
How is overtime pay calculated?
Multiply your overtime hours by your hourly rate and by the overtime multiplier. In the United States, 7.5 hours of overtime at $15 an hour are paid 7.5 × $15 × 1.5 = $168.75. The calculator adds this to your regular pay for an estimate of your gross weekly pay.
Is my timesheet saved anywhere?
Only in your browser, so you find it again on your next visit from the same device. Nothing is sent, and the “Clear the week” button deletes it.
